Dear First Pres,

Are you in a Growth Group? I met with my Growth Group guys last night. Each of us has been out quite a bit this summer, but last night we almost had our entire group together. It was a reminder of two things: (1) I’m really grateful for this group, (2) the start of the school year is just around the corner. Why share that with you? Because if you aren’t in a Growth Group, I think you’d also really appreciate being in one. And, the start of the school year is a great time to launch something new in your weekly routine.

What are Growth Groups? Growth Groups are groups of 5-12 people that explore scripture, build community, pray, and live out what they are learning together. They can be men only, women only, or co-ed. They usually meet weekly and spend time reflecting together on the Bible passage that will be used for the upcoming sermon. Each group has a point person who is connected with our Growth Group Leadership Team for support and encouragement.

How do I get into a Growth Group? You have three options. (1) You can sign up online to join an existing Growth Group and our leadership team will work with you to find the right match. (2) You can launch your own new group by registering it online and assigning a point person. (3) You can repurpose your existing group (house church, prayer group, book study, etc.) by registering the group online and assigning a point person. And, the Growth Group Leadership Team is always available to help you in this process.

Why Growth Groups? Each of us who is a follower of Christ shares a common commission from Him. We call it the Great Commission. The commission is to be disciple-makers. Growth Groups are a key part of our church’s strategy to live into that commission together. The core purpose of Growth Groups is to grow disciples who make disciples. The best way to do that is in community and with community - a community that is centered on the Good News of Jesus as revealed in the Scriptures, dependent upon the Holy Spirit through prayer, and committed to live out the Gospel in daily life. The fruit of being in that kind of community is powerful and life-changing. It equips, encourages, challenges and inspires us to step out in faith and mission while also providing the relational support that all of us need.
