Dear First Pres,

How happy I am to be reconnecting with so many of you as I return from my sabbatical! I traveled much of the time during the three months I was away. I was very active, cherishing the freedom of being outdoors and exploring new places with family and friends. Being away from my usual day-to-day responsibilities was very restful. It was a wonderful experience in body and soul. Spiritually, I can say that the sense of God's abiding presence was with me throughout my sabbatical.
The two scripture passages I meditated on were Romans 8 and Psalm 139; God's Word certainly reinforced what I was experiencing!  No matter where I went, God kept showing up in so many delightful ways. I saw God's hand of providence, heard his voice in quiet times, and the Holy Spirit reminded me of particular scriptures at specific times. Several authors, including C.S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, and Henri Nouwen have written words that challenged and encouraged me.  I saw the Lord in people who showed kindness, who "went the extra mile" for us when we needed help or advice, and in the love of family and friends. I was continually awed by the amazing variety of all sorts that God wove into creation, including the variety of ways in which He is present to us. The more I was able to pay attention, the more I was able to perceive God's continual presence. It was fantastic!

This Sunday we celebrate the end of the Christmas Season with Epiphany. It's the day of the Church calendar when we mark Christ's appearing to the Gentiles, represented in the story of the Magi who came from the East to worship the baby, Jesus. The Magi had to travel a long way to find Jesus, but we don't have to. He has crossed the distance of space and time to be with us. He loves us, cares about us, and calls us to walk with Him daily. I didn't have to travel anywhere to be "with" Jesus, but it sure was amazing to experience all the ways and places that He showed up!
I'm so grateful for the gift of time and space to be refreshed and energized. Thank you again, church, for your kindness and generosity in giving me a sabbatical. See you Sunday!

Blessings,
Lana
