Dear First Pres,

Diane and I took a paper copy of the Wall Street Journal for many years. One of my favorite things about the Journal is that on the left side of the front page is a long list of article summaries. If I wanted a quick summary of the contents of the day’s Journal I could quickly read through those summaries. Today’s letter from me is meant to read like that left column on the Journal’s front page.

Dear First Pres,

I’ve been wondering a lot this week. In particular, I’m wondering what the impact would be if 35 more people in our congregation took on the Sunday practice of “worship one, serve one.” 35 people is less than 10% of our average Sunday attendance in 2023. If, across both services, we had 35 more people come early or stick around for a second hour of service, what impact would it make?

Dear First Pres,

Have you been counting down the days until the school year begins? If you’re in education or have students in your home, the answer is probably, “yes.” In my family, Diane is 6 days out; Kate is already in Spokane getting settled before classes begin for her junior year at Whitworth; Andrew is 25 days out from his sophomore year at Westmont (coming back from India on Sunday night); and Rebekah is 11 days out from her last year at Bullard High.

Dear First Pres,

“Jesus took her by the hand and said to her, 'Talitha koum!' (which means 'Little girl, I say to you, get up!'). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.”  Mark 5:41-42

Dear First Pres,

Dear First Pres,

FPC’s Eat Downtown is one of my favorite events. It combines three things I love: eating out, FPC folks, and downtown Fresno. That’s why I’m particularly excited about this Sunday. Instead of going to your house and figuring out what to prepare in the midst of a summer heat wave, why not show some love to one of our local restaurants?

“Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Mark 5:34

Dear First Pres,

Dear First Pres,

This coming Sunday we launch a brand new sermon series. But before I tell you about that, let me first just ask, “How did the Lord work in your heart through our study of Matthew 5:1-16?” I was grateful for Jon Jo’s testimony in last week’s letter. My prayer is that you learned to appreciate and love the King’s heart more deeply than before, and that your heart became a little more like His.

Happy Thursday FPC Fresno,

Dear First Pres,

In last week’s letter I affirmed our church’s investment in World Vision’s work in Bena Tsemay, Ethiopia. It’s work that is truly transforming lives.
